Talking Threads / 2003 / Royal College of Art
Process: This project was the predecessor to flowsonic in my exploration into design concepts that would use technology to make people more conscious of their bodies. This concept allows people to have an invisible layer of expression in clothing that can only be unconvered by exploring your clothing with your mobile phone. The concept utilizes image processing algorithms to recognize silk screened graphics on clothing and to output preprogramed audio from your phone. For each shirt’s graphics, there would be a corresponding set of sounds that would only be made when the video camera from your phone passes over that graphic. |

Skills: Early on I was doing some exploratory sketching to express motion on paper. Once the concept was discovered I began to focus on creating a prototype. To get the working prototype to work, I used Retina, an existing vision library with a very friendly gui. I wrote C code to pass necessary data to Max MSP through MIDI inputs. Max MSP was then used to control the music tracks. Video: Talking Threads - a video of a working prototype. |

The concept started with playing air guitar using a striped shirt and a video phone.

The technology seemed to be a realistic possibility

I felt there was an aesthetic language that could be both read by people and also by a computer.

the scenario would involve a person finding the shirt they like

they discover a tag that explains the unique behaviour of the shirt

dial the shirt number

the program is sent to your phone and you can play your shirt.

a real working prototype of the concept was made to try the experience
