Open Source / 2004 / Royal College of Art
Process: Open Source is a public square which myself, Chris Glaister and Tomas Rosen submitted for the International Concrete Design Competition. The architectural proposal is a public square which constantly evolves to suit the activities of a community. Chronos Chromos Concrete would be employed to create a vast digital display which can change the patterns on the surface in minutes. The patterns on the surface are designed and evolved by members of the community which uses it. It is a leap away from the static and inflexible public spaces populating our cities which once built, remain the same for decades. The design won first place in the International Concrete Design Competition. |

space scenarios
This shows how the open square can be used as a football pitch during weekday afternoons.

the active concrete display wraps along the floor and turns into a wall

at lunchtime the concrete will change color to show human traffic and will have a large info. display

On Sundays, the square creates demarcations for the market vendor stalls

in the summertime the space facilitates street theatre and projections of childrens art.
in tens years time the square can adapt and turn into anything.
