Process: Growing up in Vancouver, I was always going on hikes and exploring the woods to the music of my old sony walkman. Unfortunately, after 10 years of hard work it evetually broke and played all my music at a faster speed than normal turning all the music Ilistened to into Alvin and the Chipmunks. As strange as this may sound, it actually became more fun to listen do during my romps into the woods. Later on I discovered a word to describe this experience: Flow is a term first coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. People use music in order to acheive a state of flow whether it’s getting absorbed and dancing to music in a night club or when going for a run in the great outdoors. Flowsonic is a music player which allows athletes to have a better connection between the music their listening to and their physical motion. It takes the musical tools that a dj uses to make people dance and incorporates it into a musical player that people can use while exersicing. It is able to select, manipulate and filter music based on a person’s physical motion This project was sponsored by Sony Entertainment Europe |

Skills: this project involved everything from writing Labview programs to laminating wood. The code was written in Labview. Stephen Hughes from Media Lab Europe constructed the wireless accelerometer that was sending the motion data to a pc. serial input was taken and read into labview, analyzed and passed as a midi signal through to ableton Live a real time music manipulation application.
